The William and Mary Surry Justice League meets at 7:00 PM on Mondays in the SEAC office. WMSJL is a group of students working to help local Surry County residents protect the environmental and economic viability of their community. The community is currently threatened by a proposal by the Old Dominion Electric Cooperative to build a huge, dirty coal plant in the town of Dendron. WMSJL works to prevent this in many ways. Currently we have three teams working on different projects:
- The On the Ground team works directly with residents of Surry County, supporting them in various ways including door-to-door canvassing, strategizing, publicity for events, and many other tasks.
- The Downwind team works on coordinating with citizens of Williamsburg and James City County who will be affected by this plant. Allying with the Williamsburg Climate Action Network, we are working on communicating with local politicians about the ill effects this plant would have on the Williamsburg/James City County community.
- The Statewide team works on finding ways to tie in the many students and other activists across the state who want to help the campaign in some way. We are currently planning some coordinated actions and are creating presentations to give at big events. This group should help make the campaign more public and accessible to people across the state.
If any of this sounds interesting, or if you have another idea of something we could do to fight this plant, please come join us at our meeting! We need as much help as we can get.
