W&M Take Back the Tap is our campus’ take on a national initiative to de-incentivize the consumption (and potentially ban the sale) of disposable plastic water bottles. We think it’s important to emphasize reusables and reusable culture as a way to reduce plastic waste. Reusables also limit the profits generated by big companies leading the way in water privatization, a phenomenon that will increasingly threaten access to water as our global population continues to decrease the worldwide supply of potable water faster than it can recover. We also stress the importance of drinking water in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and think that given the safety and cleanliness of tap water in our community, we should help people embrace tap water sources.
On campus, we aim to increase the number of water bottle refilling stations and promote the use of tap water over bottled alternatives. We are currently exploring ways to provide reusables to incoming students and increase awareness of our tap water infrastructure, even as we continue to enhance it.
